Piazza Sforza e Palazzo Cesarini già Dataria Apostolica |
S. Maria in Vallicella has always been popularly referred to as the Chiesa Nuova (New Church). Built between 1586 and 1594, it is the oldest of the group of churches modeled on the Gesù. It is the mother church of the order founded by S. Filippo Neri, a major Counter Reformation figure. In order to include it in this view, Vasi moved the church dome forward considerably. In the 1630s Borromini added the Oratorio of the Filippini (1), as well as the adjoining monastery, which, together with the church, occupy the whole city block. All of the other buildings visible in the print were demolished in the 1880s to make way for the wide Corso Vittorio Emanuele II. The portion we see of Palazzo Sforza Cesarini (2) was demolished, but a large part of that 15th century building (not visible in the print) survives, with a new facade on Corso Vittorio.
